Writing a Song

I’ve been a songwriter since I was 12 years old (about 25 years if you’re counting). I love writing and honestly wish I had more time to devote to it. Well this week I have the great honor of writing a song for Christine’s Grandma. Her Grandma’s journey is coming to an end and she’s expected to head home to Jesus any day. It’s both heartbreaking and joyful at the same time. This isn’t a woman that I know well. In fact, I believe I’ve only seen her twice. But as I’ve been writing this song, I’ve felt like I’ve known her my whole life.

Yesterday, Christine told me that her Grandma always had something good to say. She was never negative and always had a smile for everyone. That was all I needed. At first, I was trying to write the song from the perspective of those who have known her best…but as I worked through my writing process, the song started to be personal. It started to be from my heart. I found myself tearing up with emotion about a woman I hardly know. Then I realized…I do know her well. I know her well, because she has the same heart for Jesus that I do. I know her well, because we share the same Heavenly Father. I know her well, because we walk in the same grace. I’m blessed beyond measure to be able to put words to music for this woman.

In the end, she’s going home before I do…and you want to know something…

I’m really going to miss her.
